A statewide conference for Georgia Women Entrepreneurs!
Secretary of State Cathy Cox was the dinner keynote speaker at the first annual statewide women business
owners conference in 2001. Her topic was Women Business Owners, an Economic Force in Georgia. Georgia
Women Entrepreneurs Conference 2001: Power through Knowledge, Wisdom through Sharing was held April 25
and 26 at the Radisson Riverfront Hotel in Augusta. It was conducted by Georgia Women Entrepreneurs
(GWEN), a part of The University of Georgia and the Georgia SBDC Network.
Sponsors and speakers, Augustas Dynamic Duo, Gwen Fulcher Young and Ann Taylor presented the April
26 breakfast keynote address: Weve Come a Long Way!. Gwen Fulcher Young owns a very successful real estate
firm in Augusta. She said, "Im not afraid to try something new, thats what risk is all about. I also like
to have fun." This is why she jumps out of perfectly good airplanes! Ann Taylor owns one of the largest
and most prestigious automobile dealerships in Augusta. Ann said, "We will have fun working together on
the GWEN Conference." Both women are well known for their good business sense and their work in the community.
They were both sponsors of the GWEN Conference 2001. These sponsors helped defray costs and made the conference
affordable for any business owner in Georgia who wanted to participate.
The GWEN Conference task force (17 women business consultants from the Georgia SBDC Network) planned the agenda
so that each business owner had time for working ON her business with others who understand the risks, frustrations,
and satisfaction of being a woman business owner. Networking and sharing opportunities were built into the breakout
sessions throughout the twenty-four hour period. Many breakout sessions took the format of roundtables or
discussions led by successful women business owners or GWEN faculty from the University of Georgia and the
Georgia SBDC Network. Networking and sharing sessions were enriching for life as a business owner.
A highlight of the after-dinner dessert reception on April 25 was networking and sharing with speakers,
leaders, participants, and the nominees and recipient of the 2001 GWEN Award. The nominees and award recipient
were announced at dinner on April 25. This year the women were nominated from the ranks of The Georgia SBDC
Network. The nominations were based on growth and business acumen gained through their work and association
with the Georgia SBDC program.
